Its name is derived from canau, which comes from "canal", and is not at all a change from the singular to the plural. La-canau actually means the canal, in this case the one that once naturally linked the Lacanau lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean. Around 1810, engineer Nicolas Brémontier thought of fixing the dunes with pine trees, but it wasn't until the marshes were drained that the soil became suitable for forest vegetation, around 1855. In 1884, Pierre Ortal, a landowner in Lacanau-ville and head of department at Chemins de fer des Landes, announced his intention to create a seaside resort on the commune's coastal dunes.
