It's one of the first towns to be reached once you've crossed the viaduct. This former oyster-farming port, county town and historic capital of the island, lies to the south-east of Oléron, opposite the mainland. Vauban's citadel makes the commune one of the island's top tourist attractions. A major component of the Marennes-Oléron basin, along with La Tremblade and Marennes, Le Château-d'Oléron is closely linked to oyster farming. It's great to stroll along the Ors channel and admire the multicolored huts. The town loves bright colors, and it's no coincidence that it has become a major center for the visual arts.
