In the Charente estuary, Soubise houses a river port, a shipyard for pleasure and draws its game with tourism, just steps from Oléron Island, in the heart of the salt marshes… Built on the first rocky spur encountered by coming from the sea, on the left bank of Charente, overlooking the river, the site naturally stands for defense. In the Middle Ages, his castle which was one of the largest fiefdoms of the seigneury of Châtelaillon changed several times. Twice the victim of a fire, there is nothing left today. A woman particularly marked the city. In 1575, the Baronese baroness entered the family of Rohan, by the marriage of Catherine de Parthenay. Catherine de Parthenay participated in the siege of La Rochelle, side Huguenot, under the name of Rohan's Douairière. This remarkable woman had the beautiful hotel in front of the church built and called here: The Hotel des Rohan. Erigée in Principality for the Rohan, Soubise, with some tax freedom, the site was a privileged and well-located crossing point for the smuggling of tobacco and import fabrics. Soubise was one of the only "organized" crossing points on the river (with the Saint Savinien ferry) between Taillebourg and the ocean until the construction of the Tonnay-Charente Suspension Bridge in 1842.Since 2013, a smuggler has again voted on Charente. Between Soubise and Rochefort, this flat, aluminum boat replaces the Soubise of the 1960 s. It can pass 11 passengers with or without bicycle. We're far away from the 350 Soubise passengers! But the service is appreciated.
