Aulnay-de-Saintonge deserves a special mention, if only for its church of Saint-Pierre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Located between Melle and Saint-Jean-d'Angély, it offers an unforgettable quality of sculpted decor. The visitor will admire the interior of the nave, as well as the capitals or outside the south portal where a rich Romanesque bestiary is displayed. This exceptional site is completed by the Medieval Garden arranged behind the chevet of the church and the remains of the temple of Celtic origin. Romanesque art lovers, this stage is for you! In the centre of the village, the keep, built at the same time as the church, remains the only vestige of the feudal castle of Aulnay that Du Guesclin took over from the English in 1372. There is also a 17th century dovecote.
