Saint-Mars-du-Désert is located 20 km northeast of Nantes, between the Erdre and Loire valleys. The area's rural charm is reflected in its beautiful rolling countryside, surrounded by the surrounding villages. The name Saint-Mars-du-Désert comes from the Latin Sanctus Medardus, the name of Saint Médard, patron saint of the parish. The word desert recalls the swallowing up of the land by the Erdre River. Saint-Mars also has a name in Gallo, the local langue d'oïl: Saent-Mard-deü-Dezèrt. The commune also boasts the Mazerolles plain, covering an area of 1,000 hectares. It's a protected site of ornithological and tourbier interest (6th century).
