Former commandery of the Templars where the knights, returning from the Holy Land, had established themselves to protect passers-by from criminals. Originally, the village was called Temple-Mauperthuis (bad passage). This village has always been a commercial centre. In the past, it welcomed the truckers coming from Bouvron, Fay-de-Bretagne. The Temple was known for the organization of six annual fairs and its horse races. After the war, the town tried to restructure itself by trying to obtain more land, increasing from 81 ha to 170 ha in 1974. It has a beautiful set of granite ashlar buildings around the church.
