Traces of jewelry date back to the Celtic period, but it was in the 12th century that the lords of Châteaubriant created the parish. From 1790 to 1793, Abbaretz was attached to La Meilleraye for the elections of the primary assemblies of the Loire-Inférieure. Two industrial experiences have marked the commune: the blast furnaces of La Jahotière, the extraction of iron around 1850 and tin from 1953 to 1957. A rich heritage: Saint-Pierre church, Villeneuve manor, Jahotière manor, La Pervenchère dwelling, the former Beautraye manor, the funeral chapel, the Barre dwelling, the former parish church (15th-16th centuries), the tin mines of Abbaretz.
