2,000 years ago, Bavay was the capital of a powerful ancient province. Archaeological remains are still visible, such as the ancient Forum, the largest Roman forum in France and an archaeological museum. Near the present-day church, an ancient heating system known as the Hypocaust can be seen, the only remnant of the ancient Roman thermal baths. In the 12th century, the town took on its present name. Fortifications were built, and can still be visited by following the ancient "chemin de ronde". Although the town was destroyed during the Second World War, Bavay remains a major landmark in French history, and a must-see if you're visiting the region.
