2000 years ago, Bavay was a powerful ancient provincial capital. Archaeological remains are still visible, notably the ancient Forum, the largest Roman forum in France and an archaeological museum. We can also discover, near the current church, an ancient heating system called Hypocaust, unique vestige of the ancient Roman baths. In the 12th century, the city took its current name. Fortifications were built, which can still be walked along the ancient pathway. Although the city was destroyed during the Second World War, Bavay remains a major point in French history and a must-see if you are in the region.
