You are in the Ariège valley. Auterive (10 000 inhabitants) is established on both sides of this lively river which flows into the Garonne 25 kilometers further. The city is framed by the hillsides of the Lauragais and the Volvestre. It is part of a 48 km long hydrographic network crossed by many rivers. A lordship is mentioned there as early as the 11th century. Targeted by the Crusaders, then victims of the Wars of Religion, the city and its castle were burned several times. In the 18th century, the arrival of the railroad gave a real boost to the city. Today, it is a pleasant starting point for trips along the water.
