This village, located on the road from Foix to Toulouse, through the Lèze valley, was the birthplace of two illustrious characters. The first one is Martin Guerre, whose literature and cinema, with Gérard Depardieu, have told the extraordinary adventure of a man who was thought to be dead in the war and who "resurrected". The second, much less known, is Octave Crémazie (1827-1879), whose great-grandfather, Jacques Crémazie, was born in Artigat in 1735. This poet is considered "the father of French Canadian poetry". One of the largest boulevards in Montreal is named after him. Artigat has a swimming pool and a municipal campground
