This ancient citadel fortified in the 14th century by Gaston Fébus became, in the 16th and 17th centuries, a fierce Huguenot (Protestant) stronghold. It was besieged and demolished three times, but was soon reborn from its ruins. This small town changed its name in the 18th century to honor the memory of its most illustrious child, the philosopher Pierre Bayle. Artists and craftsmen have settled here: many art galleries and workshops are open to the public. In the summer, exhibitions and events are organized and make this village one of the high places of painting, sculpture and engraving. A farmer's market is held every Sunday.
