Mirecourt owes its fame above all to the violin-making industry that developed here in the 17th century, and to the trade that made it a highly sought-after center at the time. Mirecourt's expertise in arts and crafts, particularly violin making, lacemaking and organ building, made it one of the wealthiest towns in Lorraine. It is a great trading town, and still preserves some traces of this sumptuous era. The town center still bears witness to this rich past, with its superb 18th-century houses in the faubourg Saint-Vincent, around the 17th-century halles and its Gothic church.
