25th February 1916. Established in the Souilly town hall, General Pétain intended to take up a logistical and human challenge: to maintain the daily supply of troops on the line and to relieve them regularly via the RN35, linking Bar-le-Duc and Verdun (57.2 km). This road was later named the Voix Sacrée by the writer Maurice Barrès. It became the RD1916 in 2006 (a reference to the battle of Verdun) and is marked by clearly recognisable milestones. It is still in Souilly that the Americans organized their headquarters in 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. The town also has a well-preserved Bollée windmill
