During the First World War, Lachalade and the surrounding area was a battleground for moles. The stabilization of the front in the region gave rise to incessant action (trenches in the woods, use of gas, etc.). The area is home to important and fascinating memorials, such as the Haute-Chevauchée ossuary and the Ravin du Génie, a veritable open-air museum. Lachalade boasts a beautiful 14th-century church and cloister, the remains of a Cistercian abbey. From here, an 11-kilometre walking trail links all the communal sites of the 14-18 war on the Haute-Chevauchée.
