The western gateway to Lorraine's regional nature park, halfway between Verdun and Bar-le-Duc, Saint-Mihiel was awarded the Petite Cité de caractère label in 2019. Nicknamed the "Little Florence of Lorraine" for its artistic activity during the Renaissance, Saint-Mihiel lies on the Meuse River. The Benedictine abbey, collegiate church and town houses bear witness to this past. Saint-Mihiel boasts the birthplace of Lorraine's most prestigious sculptor, Ligier Richier (1500-1567), whose two works can be admired: the Sepulchre, exhibited in Saint-Étienne, and the Pâmoison de la Vierge, in Saint-Michel. Saint-Mihiel is also the birthplace of the famous Polmard butcher's shop.
