Steeped in history, Jarny is an ancient village that became a town with the arrival of the railroads, the construction of the railway station and the Châlons-Metz line in 1869, and the development of two iron ore mines in the 20th century. Small-scale industries then disappeared, giving way in the 1910s to new activities: a sugar refinery, a brewery, a cartridge factory, a power station, a metal construction company... Five neighborhoods thus took shape: Moulinelle, Droitaumont (former mining housing estates), the town center, the train station and the housing estates. Although the area has suffered from the closure of mining sites and the industrial crisis, it has managed to renew itself and retain its appeal. Today, Jarny has a population of 8,600 and is a modern, attractive town. The town's advantageous geographical location, close to the Belgian, German and Luxembourg borders, between Metz and Verdun on the one hand, and Nancy and Longwy on the other, means that it is served by the A4 and A31 motorways. It is also a major commercial center with numerous shops and companies, and an active educational, sporting and cultural hub. At the gateway to the Lorraine Regional Nature Park, Jarny is a green town surrounded by three rivers, with a marsh classified as a sensitive natural area. The park of Château de Moncel is classified as a "Jardin de France", and numerous footpaths allow you to immerse yourself in this beautiful natural setting. Last but not least, Moncel's heritage is a blend of modernity and history.
