Ars-sur-Moselle owes part of its fame to its famous Roman aqueduct. This ancient winegrowing village, known as Arcus or Arx in the Middle Ages, takes its name from the arches that crossed its banks. The village was ravaged and pillaged several times during the wars and invasions of the 15th century. Nearby, the remains of the aqueduct, built by the Romans to carry water from Gorze to Metz, can be seen. This 22 km-long structure consists of an underground and an overhead section. Of the original 110 piers, only 17 remain, connected by arches, and each end has a water catchment basin.
