In 753, Pepin the Short passed through the town of Theodonis Villa. This is the first mention of the city in a chronicle. It was very popular with the Carolingians, who held large political meetings there. Charlemagne stayed there six times. From the 10th century onwards, it was abused by the great empires; it belonged successively to the Germanic kingdom, to the counts of Luxembourg and to the Burgundian dukes. The Habsburgs took it over in the 15th century, and then it became part of Charles V's kingdom. Finally, in 1659, after several sieges, it became French under the Treaty of the Pyrenees. From then on, the town grew and developed its administration, its judicial and military system. The war of 1870 marked the beginning of a new period of unrest. Destroyed, annexed and occupied, Thionville suffered and rebuilt itself after the Second World War. It experienced remarkable growth thanks to its steel industry and developed its communication network. Today, it has managed to develop its historical and industrial heritage and invites us to discover it through several tourist circuits. We discover a city full of charm, where modernism has been perfectly integrated around remarkable monuments.
