At the confluence of the Vienne and Glane rivers, Saint-Junien has forged its identity on the basis of its know-how over the centuries and the water: tannery, glove factory and paper mill. These industries combined luxury production with the development of a working class, giving rise to the cooperative movement and the workers' union. Saint-Junien, "the red", has kept some evocative names from its working-class past, such as the Bourse du Travail and Place Lénine, which have stood the test of time alongside the Collegiate Church. In 2007, the town was awarded the "Ville et Métiers d'Art" label, and its major project is the "Cité du cuir", due to open this year.
