The site became famous thanks to the scientific discoveries of the village teacher: François Baco (1865-1947) who developed the 22 A hybrid and saved at the beginning of the th century the French vineyard attacked by the phylloxera. This hybrid still exists today in the manufacture of Armagnac.A monument to the fame of the researcher was erected in the village, and was realized by the award of Rome Jacques Dulau in the academic style of the first half of the twentieth century. Next to the church of the th century, the church overlooks the Pyrenees and the slopes of Chalosse. In 1897, Jean Rameau devoted His Lady's Poem to Purple Umbrella: " At the old bell tower of Bélus, where the view is so beautiful on the Pyrenees, the homage of a passer ".
