The site was occupied since Roman times, with the Via Domitia passing nearby. In the 9th century, Villeneuve was only a group of houses grouped around a small religious building. Villeneuve Castle, built in the 14th century on the hill, disappeared in 1850 in favour of the new cemetery. The large winegrowing farms appeared in the 19th century. This part of the Roussillon plain was once marshy, the pond was drained by order of the Templars. The lake was created in the 1970s to initially serve as a drinking water supply. For several years now, the Department has been developing the site and its three reservoirs. Doubling the supervised swimming area, creation of mountain bike and equestrian paths, easy access for the disabled, permanent maintenance... All the conditions are in place to make this site a privileged place for relaxation for the inhabitants and tourists of the Catalan countryside.
