Pretty village with a remarkable old wash-house, Lirac is distinguished by its famous vineyard, one of the best wines of the Gard among the Côtes du Rhône. Its well-soaked character makes it somewhat atypical. The reputation of this wine is such that it has been recognised as an Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) since 1947. Lirac is also home to a natural site called La Sainte Baume, from balme in Provençal meaning "cave": an ancient limestone cave, it was undoubtedly a refuge during the Wars of Religion. In the middle of the 17th century, the discovery of a statuette of the Virgin Mary by a shepherd was considered a "miracle" and the cave became a hermitage.
