Only 3.5 km from Avignon, and inseparable from the city of the popes which faces it only separated by the Rhone, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon was the main residence of cardinals and high officials of the papal court in the 14th century. Finding the ramparts of Avignon too cramped, and no doubt enjoying the countryside, they built sumptuous residences that can still be admired. The tourist office offers a guide for walks and hikes in Villeneuve and its surroundings. A perfect location to discover the Gard rhodanien as well as Provence, from Vaucluse to Luberon, from the Durance to the creeks of Marseille.
