This commune is world-famous for the delectable Saint-Estèphe appellation wines. The first vines are thought to have been planted in Roman times, but it was from the 17th century onwards that the estate expanded thanks to the drainage of marshy land. The vineyards of Saint-Etienne cover some 1,230 hectares. The appellation's main grape varieties are Merlot, Cot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère. Amidst the vineyards, the village is dominated by its 17th-century church. From the old port, you can admire the vast panorama of the Gironde.
