It was the Visigoths who first gave a name to the mound of rolled pebbles on which this town is built. Puylaurens was still spelled Puy Laurens at the turn of the century, confirming the original Occitan form of Pueg Laurens. In the 16th century, this medieval fortified town was to become one of the jewels in the crown of the "Pays de Cocagne", thanks to its famous pastel cacanhas which, by giving blue hues to the whole of Europe, were to make the region rich and famous. The pastel mills, which helped spread ideas, encouraged the development of Protestantism.
