Two versions still clash today as to the birth of this village. The first concerns the creation of a hospital by Jean I of Chalon-Arlay, the second asserts that several hospitals were already operating there. With the presence of an executioner, hence the name of the inhabitants called the Trouille-Bourreaux. The locality was rich of an iron mine exploited until the middle of the 19th century. Today it is a very peaceful town not far from the Château de Joux, where it is good to spend pleasant holidays. The chapel of Sainte-Philomène is another curiosity, not forgetting the cheese dairy where remarkable Comté cheeses are made.
