The village was founded in the 14thcentury by soldiers guarding the Château du Cirque (Château de Châtelneuf-en-Vennes), who had obtained the right to "maisonnetter". Destroyed by the Swedes in the 17th century, its stones were used to build the Consolation monastery, the wish of the widow of the Marquis de Varambon. The park, with its waterfalls and grottoes, has become a popular place for walks. The listed Notre-Dame-de-Consolation chapel (15th and 16th centuries), the cirque, the Dessoubre spring and the viewpoint of the Rocher du Prêtre (Priest's Rock), which towers 350 metres above the valley, are all must-sees. If you're feeling sporty, take the Via Ferrata.
