The first major stagecoach stop on the old Alsace route from Besançon, Baume-les-Dames has long been marked by the religious orders established within its walls. Its name refers to the nuns of the abbey founded between the5th and 8th centuries. Under the French Revolution, Baume-les-Nonnes became Baume-les-Dames. It was also here, in the 18th century, that Jouffroy d'Abbans launched the first steamboat. Long a simple stopover town, Baume-les-Dames has gradually been transformed by the enhancement of its heritage. Baume-les-Dames lies in a majestic natural setting between seven hills, at the confluence of the Doubs and Cusancin rivers.
