Noiraigue takes its name from a Latin word meaning "black water". The village has a population of just over half a thousand, and is the starting point for excursions to the Creux-du-Van nature reserve and the Areuse gorges. This wild and powerful river can be contemplated on walks where you'll cross footbridges and the astonishing Saut du Brot, a bridge that intrigues walkers. It's best to avoid walks in wet weather, as the Areuse is capricious. The Creux-du-Van nature reserve offers exceptional natural diversity and alpine flora. The rocky cirque is equally impressive.
