Until the Protestant reform of 1536, the priory of Payerne remained a high place of Cluniac civilization in the heart of a prosperous and active town. The 11th-century abbey church, a masterpiece of Cluniac architecture and the most important example of Romanesque art in Switzerland, stands in the centre of the old town. Located halfway between Bern and Lausanne, Payerne is a city of business, commerce and leisure. The welcome is warm, the laughter easy and the corkscrew deft. Payerne's charcuterie, known far and wide, is well worth tasting, as are the wines from the vineyards of Lavaux.
