Things to see and do Wisconsin

Inside the Door County Library is a small local museum with permanent exhibits of Wisconsin artists and temporary exhibitions of local artists. Paintings and photographs can be admired. One collection highlights the work of Gerhard Miller, arguably the most influential artist in the Door County area, who passed away in 2003. The museum paid tribute to him by borrowing his name. The Miller Art Museum is not an obligatory stopover during a stay in the region, but it allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture.

There are three marine museums in Door County: one in Sturgeon Bay, open year-round; one in Gills Rock, open May to October; and one in the Cana Island Lighthouse. Sturgeon Bay is the most complete, organized in several rooms, each presenting a facet of the maritime history of the region: the engine room, the marina, a reproduction of the command post of a ship. This lighthouse was erected in 1868 and automated in 1926. During the summer months, you can take part in guided tours to get inside: two visits per hour are organised in summer. The lighthouse is located at the northern tip of Peninsula State Park, of which it is a part. From up there, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Michigan. A small museum dedicated to the history of the lighthouse was inaugurated in the building that housed the keeper's residence. Since 1978, the lighthouse has been registered as a National Historic Site.

The ten outdoor gardens offer ten different atmospheres, including the one in Madison at Thai Pavilion and Garden, which recreates a small Thai garden and its tropical atmosphere. This pavilion is one of the three to be exported from Thailand and the only one on the territory of the United States. The Bolz Conservatory houses more than seven hundred and fifty plants representing seventy tropical and subtropical species. Rockeries, zweibrücken… Superb.

20 minutes south of Ashland, near the town of Mellen, there is a nature park with a river (the Bad River) and a lake, Loon Lake. You can go fishing, canoeing, kayaking and motor boating. It also contains a small canyon and several waterfalls. The park is home to twenty-seven kilometres of hiking trails: ideal for spending an afternoon walking or relaxing. It takes its name from the fact that copper was discovered there by the Amerindians and, centuries later, by European settlers.

Explore the lost city of Atlantis, confront the rage of Poseidon, throw yourself in the numerous slides and wave pools, this park has dozens of activities, it is easy to spend the day!

In an African setting, children have more than ten different attractions, slides, a large wave pool, and even a wave where you can make surfing and bodyboard, the Flowrider.

Mineral Point's main street concentrates all the buildings of historical interest, as well as the galleries of sculptors and painters. A short stroll down High Street and you'll take a step back in time: take a look at 22 High Street, an African art gallery housed in a stone building dating from 1875, and number 38, a detached house dating from 1868. We're moving up this street pretty quickly. Don't forget to stop by the Chamber of Commerce to get brochures and a map of the various galleries and sites.

It's time to test your sea legs, so to speak! Even if you are not alone but accompanied by a skipper, relaxation is guaranteed. Aboard the Quinn Mary, which can accommodate up to six passengers, you'll depart on a peaceful cruise on Lake Michigan. Excursions are proposed during the day, others for the sunset. The windy days are obviously the best. Sea Dog Sailing cruises are available from May to the end of September. It is strongly recommended to book in advance.
