HUCK FINN’S ON THE WATER
Read moreIt's better to have a car to go to Huck Finn's for dinner or lunch. The restaurant is located on French Island, slightly north of La Crosse. From downtown, take Highway 35 north, cross the Black River, reach the island and drive down south to the restaurant. In the marina, close to the water, there is a panoramic restaurant overlooking the Black River. Quiet and welcoming. Simple and good fish and meat dishes. The restaurant closes during the winter season, from the beginning of January to the end of March.
WHITE GULL INN
Read moreThe White Gull Inn is not only a B&B: it is also a restaurant, and certainly one of the best in the area. In the large room on the first floor, on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from May to October, and on Saturday to Thursday evenings from November to April, it's a candlelit evening with a menu of lake fish, beef and other local specialties. The famous Fish Boil is served every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night from May to October, and on Friday nights the rest of the year. An experience not to be missed!
BARTOLOTTA'S LAKE PARK BISTRO
Read moreWe're not sure whether it's the view or the menu that wins the day here. Sure, the restaurant is perched atop a hill overlooking Lake Michigan, but the lamb chops aren't bad either. Granted, the view stretches out over the immensity of the waters, and in the evening there are colored reflections on the surface of the lake, but all the same, the filet mignon is very good. We'll put the two on the same level: one of Milwaukee's best French restaurants!
MADER’S
Read moreMilwaukee's best-known German restaurant, founded in 1902. In those days, a lunch was only worth 4 cents! It is housed in a building that looks like a German castle with its beautiful tower overlooking the street. Its rather charged Baroque decoration is a perfect example of the German influence in this part of West Town, which has remained intact despite the restructuring of a large part of the district. Numerous local specialities, served in a very picturesque and pleasant setting. Special mention for their very popular pork shank.
GRAY DOG DELI
Read moreThis cafe serves sandwiches, salads and other hot dishes rather correct. Portions are always generous, especially on sandwiches, which fill the belly well. In season, many customers take their takeaway orders and go on picnics in the surrounding area. The atmosphere, very local, is friendly. If the place has been held by several successive owners, the site itself has existed for more than a hundred years, and the bronze dog posted above the entrance has been guarding the High Street forever!
THE COFFEE HAUS
Read moreCharming little coffee in a small house at 2 nd Street and 6 th Avenue. Above the Das Alte Victorian Haus art store on the ground floor, small room on the first floor with a few tables. Freshly brewed sandwiches and coffee. In the hall at the top of the stairs, photos of New Glarus at the beginning of the century: apart from its paved roads, the village has not changed much. Nice place to take a break.
CAFE CONTINENTAL
Read moreIn Madison, restaurants are opening and closing at a pretty steep pace. Café Continental has been open for several years, an undeniable sign of good health. Chef Chiavo serves European and Italian cuisine, both for vegetarians and lovers of good steaks. This good restaurant, quite small, is also a wine bar. The table next to the window is the most pleasant.
TAKUMI JAPANESE RESTAURANT
Read moreAn excellent sushi restaurant, certainly the best in town and the most popular with locals. The fish is very fresh and melts in the mouth. You can complete your sushi platter with an equally successful donburi or teriyaki. The service is attentive and the presentation meticulous. The lunch menu, consisting of a bento box that includes teriyaki meat or fish, rice and soup, is particularly advantageous.
SIMPLE CAFE
Read moreWe love this restaurant, ideal for breakfast or lunch. Beware, it's crowded in summer, especially at weekends. You can try the excellent scrambled eggs or the Spanish tortilla with smoked trout. You can also make your own omelette by choosing three ingredients, such as andouille sausage, caramelized onions or smoked ham. For lunch, you can also indulge in our excellent burgers and sandwiches. All ingredients are sourced from local farms, and the menu changes according to the season.
FATZO'S
Read moreA little place that doesn't look like much but that serves excellent pizzas and very filling sandwiches. The sandwiches come in two sizes, and for the 16-inch version, you'd better have a hearty appetite (or a group of people)! The fillings are very varied: beef, turkey, Italian meatballs, tuna or just vegetables. An establishment adored by the locals, for a typically American experience. You have to wait a bit at lunchtime, but the service is still very fast.
L'ETOILE
Read moreL'étoile is without a doubt the best restaurant in town. Chef Tory Miller and his seven-course menu is renowned throughout the state of Wisconsin. Very attentive to the quality and originality of the products served, the restaurant team works closely with several local farmers in order to promote the region's terroir. The result is a French-inspired cuisine, with an American touch, all in finesse and subtlety that will delight even the most discerning taste buds.
LA KITCHENETTE
Read moreFormerly Chez Nanou, this restaurant has been taken over by a Frenchwoman from Provence. If you're tired of pork ribs, pizza, burgers and other American specialties, come find refuge here! On the menu, salads, gratins, croque-monsieur and especially salted pancakes, each one better than the other. The welcome is also very warm. For dessert, opt for the delicious lavender crème brûlée or, more classic, the chocolate fondant. In short, a little French break that feels good.
BRAISE RESTAURANT
Read moreAt Braise, the dishes are simple and delicious, the produce is local and some even comes from the roof! A vegetable garden has been set up, and the chef picks herbs and vegetables to suit his menu. The atmosphere in the restaurant's two dining rooms is convivial. We particularly like the second room, with its large tables where you can meet new people. In addition to being a very good cook, the chef offers cooking classes, which are a great activity during your stay in Milwaukee.
DIGGER’S STING
Read moreA friendly restaurant with a subdued atmosphere, whose entire décor is inspired by The Sting, the George Roy Hill film. The menu differs at lunch and dinner: the lunch menu is more oriented towards hamburgers and salads, while the dinner menu focuses on meats (superb pork and beef ribs), seafood (the Jumbo Black Tiger Shrimps, huge shrimps, are excellent), all accompanied by a wine list that almost all come from California. And rest assured, the Sting is not a scam.
DEEP WATER GRILLE AND SOUTH SHORE BREWERY
Read moreThis superb pub-restaurant is located on the main street of Ashland, housed in an old brick building with a lot of character. The menu ranges from a large sandwich to a marinated steak and fish from Lake Superior. The place is also a brewery, and its six varieties of beers brewed on site are to be discovered. You will also be able to taste local beers, not made on the spot but brewed in the surrounding towns.
SAFEHOUSE
Read moreThe SafeHouse is a wacky place, where everything is mystery and spy stories. The restaurant is a real labyrinth, with secret passages in every corner, unsuspected rooms... We won't tell you more so as not to spoil your pleasure. To enter, you will need a password if you come after 8pm. To go out, ask for the secret passageway in the phone booth... As for cooking, it's not great gastronomy, but you can expect good sandwiches, grills, salads.
MAIN STREET PUB AND GRILL
Read moreNo big kitchen, just a pub that troubleshoots in the event of a big hunger. Burgers, salads, sandwiches.
THE GLARNER STUBE
Read moreThe restaurant's rough wooden room creates an authentic atmosphere, allowing you to fully enjoy a cheese fondue, a platter of cold meats or even a schnitzel. It's all very good. Behind the bar, you can see an old cheese vat made of polished recycled copper, which has been turned into an extractor hood above the fire. Just for the record, the Glarner Stube boasts the largest urinal in the Midwest... A New Glarus must-see! Don't forget to book, the place is known and the room is quickly packed.
A PIG IN A FUR COAT
Read moreThe dishes here are a little out of the ordinary, especially in terms of seasonings and accompaniments. The whole map has strong Italian and French accents, which is not to be disliked. As an appetizer, the rabbit rillettes are excellent. One could call the cuisine modern American and creative. A good address, surprising, where one dines on large tables, neck and neck with one's neighbours, in a frankly friendly atmosphere. They also serve excellent cocktails, which are out of the ordinary.
