Things to see and do Basque Country

Since 2021, Ormaiztegi has been proud to welcome a new work of art to its public space: a large-scale fresco measuring 200 square metres! Created by local artist Balu, it pays tribute to the town's past and its emblematic sites, such as the former spa, a symbol of luxury and a must-visit spot for wealthy tourists from 1954 to 1964, as well as the former railway station. One of the largest frescoes in Europe. A work well worth a look.

Located in the historic center of Ordizia, three sculptures pay tribute to Baserritarra, the typical Basque garb (red skirt, black apron and espadrilles) with which the town of Goierritarra has been closely associated for centuries. They are Goizane, Peru and Mariane, three figures in wood and stone symbolizing the traditional figures of the Baserri woman and the shepherd who used to come down with their produce to the popular fair held every week in the Plaza Mayor.

At the center of the Aizkorri mountain range lies this nature park, which borders on Alava. At the heart of its 18,000 hectares of mountains and forests lie the Oria, Urola and Deba rivers. There's also the San Adrian tunnel, a natural cave that has served throughout history as an access route between Guipúzcoa and Álava. The possibilities for hiking here are immense, and you'll discover a wealth of flora and fauna.

The Hermitage of the Vierge de la Peña de Faido is the oldest sanctuary in the Basque Country. Built in a cave in the th century, the church gradually enlarged to three floors. It also enriched itself with various additions, including outside buildings of Romanesque style. It will see a magnificent th century altarpiece carved in stone and murals that enhance the beauty and strangeness of the site.

This romantic castle has a little resemblance to the bavarian castles. An enchanting place, with all its maze-like towers and its levels that bring back for us during knights. Also a park of great ecological wealth, with no fewer than 70 species of exotic and endemic trees. The head office at the origin of the chalk-lining of Butrón and the castle was built in the 13th century. In the 19th century, the castle was restored, skilfully and in the greatest respect for its medieval origins, by the architect Francisco de Cubas.
