FRONTÓN JAI ALAI

Classified as a "cultural asset" by the Basque government, Gernika's Jai Alai fronton was built in 1963 by Bilbao-born architect Secundino Zuazo. Considered one of the best pediments in the world, it features a large sculpture of cesta punta players, a highly impressive variant of Basque pelota played with a wicker chistera. The fronton is the venue for some of the most important competitions in the Basque Country. The tourist office organizes cesta punta demonstrations.
