Guernica, a martyred city of the Spanish Civil War, is the political capital of Bizkaia, where the Basque Parliament meets. Symbol of the Basque resistance during the Civil War against Franco, this city was chosen for its greatest misfortune as the first civilian target to be bombed. At the request of the Republicans for the Spanish pavilion at the 1937 Universal Exhibition in Paris, Picasso delivered one of his most famous paintings, Guernica, in remembrance of the bombing of 26 April 1937. Situated in the centre of Urdaibai, it is a small modern town, but its importance lies in the symbol of peace and memory that it has become.
