Monuments to visit Midi-Pyrénées

Lovers of beautiful walks, we take you to the top of a rocky plateau (300 m altitude), 4 km north of Céret, where the hermitage of Saint-Ferréol is located. Built at the end of the 13th century by the Benedictine monks of the abbey of Arles-sur-Tech, it is a small group of buildings surrounded by holm oaks and built in a rather bare Romanesque style. The other interest of this walk remains the magnificent panorama on the valley of Tech, the plain and its orchards. And then, the setting lends itself to beautiful picnics with family or friends.

The citadel and ramparts have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2008. A recognition that Mont-Louis shares with Villefranche de Conflent. Having never been a member of a GE, except in a Spanish incursion in 1794 which was quickly pushed back by the ge n\ ral Ral (1736-1794), the strong place has reached its original state. So it's a fairly unique place that we can be able to cover. The story goes back to the Traite ́ des Pyre ́ es, sign in 1659, when the high cantons of Cerdanya and Du become franc. After 20 years, unable to exchange this province of Roussillon against a larger territory of Flanders, Louis XIV de\ acdi to build a strong place at the crossroads of communication routes between Capcir, Cerdanya and Conflent, to mark the new frontie re with Spain. In 1679, he entrusted the construction project to Vauban, which chose this site stratum ́ lysergic. In less than 2 years, it became what it is today, the highest strengthens city of France, and took the name Mont-Louis in honour of the Sun King.

As early as 1743, the artery, which leaves the fountain of the Fountain to end the railway line, fell into désuétude. The avenue Jean-Jaurès was the ideal place for a walk. After long work, which is very binding on the merchants and neighbours, a first tranche was opened in October 2010. According to a global plan to rédistribution traffic routes, the decrease in motor traffic with the adoption of semi-communal transit opens new spaces to passers-by. Bicycle paths, green spaces and pedestrian areas are favoured. In the central part, the parking lot is now underground and paid. Kiosks, benches and water jets give a very southern side of the Ramblas, while planted plants will not have to grow too much at the risk of breaking the perpective. Ancient nettle has been preserved and already, we see the great ambition of the future Champs-Elysées nimois: bring the people back to this historic axis.

It was in December 1816 that the third town hall settled at that location, at the time it housed the responsible of the commune but also the prison. During the next century, the building will decay and become unhealthy. At the end of 1919, the town hall moved and took its quarters of General-de-Gaulle, leaving for the building only its door.

In the past, this great iron Christ was installed on the Place de la République, instead of the former place of the Croix de la Mission. In revolutionary events, the work was transported at the Cimetière-Vieux before being definitively installed on the Place Général-Guillaut on June 26, 1994.
