A superb arch, with superb medallions, built in place of one of the gates of the old city wall in Montpellier.

The emblem of the city, this gateway was erected at the end of the 17th century at the instigation of the Sun King. Designed by architect François d'Orbay (a pupil of Mansart), the arch was built in place of one of the gates in the city's old ramparts. The façade features superb medallions depicting the King striking down an eagle (Empire) and a lion (England). On the more peaceful side, a trio of figures symbolizes the Canal du Midi, linking the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans. From up here, the panorama is splendid.

Un lieu original quand on vient de Paris mais très joli! Beaucoup plus petit que celui de Paris bien sûr mais à voir lors de sa visite à Montpellier.

Surprenante découverte.
Un Arc de Triomphe, ailleurs qu'à Paris ? Eh bien oui, à Montpellier. A côté : une esplanade ou trône la statue de Louis XIV et un belvédère offrant une belle vue sur la ville. A découvrir !
