BRUNIQUEL CASTLES
Castle at the top of the cliff overlooking the confluence of the Vère and the Aveyron, with 2 exhibitions, one of which is on prehistory
Classified as a Historic Monument since 1840, this 12th, 13th and 17th century edifice was built at the top of the cliff overlooking the confluence of the Vère and Aveyron rivers, on the site of an ancient Roman castrum. Owned by the Counts of Toulouse in the 12th century, it was divided in the 15th century between two branches of the House of Comminges, which explains its current division into Château Jeune and Château Vieux. Two permanent exhibitions: one on the filming of Le Vieux Fusil, shot within these walls; the other devoted to the Bruniquel cave (Neanderthal site).
