FORGES DE LA CHAUSSADE

Monuments to visit

On the edge of the Loire, towards the upstream, we feel the freshness of "big broth", where the Nohain flows into the Loire. Using the hydraulic energy of this watercourse, the Forges de la Chaussade, a former royal manufacture transferred to Guérigny in 1872, have for two centuries made anchors for the sea marine. The facades still bear witness to the know-how of yesteryear, the remarkable work of metalwork of the monumental portal of the forges. Note, an inscription recalls the visit on September 30, 1677, of Ms de Sévigné.

LE CAFÉ DES CHIENS - MÉDIATHÈQUE LOUIS BLAIRET

Monuments to visit

The Louis Blairet Municipal Library took place in a place steeped in history, becoming a Médiathèque. This building, famous for its original and magnificent façade, which will be renovated in 2011, will remain for all the Laignois and the Laignoises "Le Café des Chien". A little history… In the middle of the th century, Augustin Husson, limonadier, bought an old building to Joseph Viardot, a dealer. He then built a café and realized, with his talent as a sculptor and a wooden operator, a very remarkable façade, which is still admired every year by many tourists. In 1895, Anna Verrière took up the establishment, then renamed "Café des Chiens". Closed for 2003 years, the municipality decided to buy it in. After a few renovations and works, the municipal library was born. Today, it is a dynamic establishment that hosts many readers and organizes regularly events: paint shop, scrap, books for books, authors'meetings, etc. There is also a Access and a very practical Internet point. A pleasant place and a good welcome!

LES SEPT ÉCLUSES

Works of art to see

This gigantic staircase of water, made up of seven locks, was built on the will of Henri IV and his minister Sully during the construction of the Briare canal. Their objective? To unite the Loire with the Seine by means of canals, and even the Mediterranean with the Atlantic and the English Channel to better supply Paris. For more than two centuries, up to 4,000 boats passed through the canal each year, before it was abandoned in 1880. What remains is this architectural masterpiece, which is also the marvelous backdrop for the pyrotechnics show that takes place here every year at the end of July.

LONGECOURT-EN-PLAINE CASTLE

Castles to visit
4.9/5
14 reviews

This fort mansion, built in the fifteenth century, was transformed in the eighteenth century into a beautiful castle with baroque style. In the nineteenth century, other renovations were made: the dormer windows of the towers are rebuilt in neo-gothic style, the stucco in the large lounge, vandalized during passage des Prussiens are renovated in 1870, completely. During the Second World War, the castle was requisitioned by the Germans, in order to place officers and services. They are the Americans who occupied it. In 1946, the castle is listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments. It belongs to the family of Saint-Seine. The welcome from the owner, Roland of Saint-Seine, is charming. During the visit, you will discover the chapel, the vaulted cuisine, the large lounge. A journey to the time of Louis XV! The interior is stunning: stucco walls decorated marble, ceilings 7-8 metres high, sculpted, gilded. The park, lined with Burgundy, is huge. It is possible to stay in the castle: 5 rooms are designed for tourists. Authentic, large, with a beautiful antique furniture, decorated by engravings and paintings over time, they overlook the moat and the park. A magical place, out of time.

Semur-en-Auxois has finally reopened its theatre after five years of inaccessibility including two and half years of work for the safety and access standards for the disabled. This building dating from 1847 had itself undergone a fire in 1901 and was rebuilt in 1904. It still has the same appearance today: small Italian theater with a ceiling fresco and adjoining the Margot Tower which serves as actors' dressing room. Inaugurated on April 28, 2018, it hosts theatre or dance troupes, musical artists or comedians such as François Morel, programmed in September 2018. The theater accommodates 250 spectators. The 2018-2019 season promises to be rich in cultural events carried by the city of Semur, which, in this cultural dynamics, plans to restore the Liberté space which will welcome, among other things, schools with artistic vocation.

The first building dates back to the tenth Century before being restored in the fifteenth century and enlarged in the sixteenth century by Bauffremont-Sennecey. The castle has managed to escape the demolitions of the seventeenth century initiated by Rochelieu. During the French Revolution, it was dismantled by the municipality and was replaced by the church of Sennecey. Nothing is left of this castle except the bastion surrounding wall.

Today, the town hall is located in the former outbuildings of the castle and the Tourist Office, in the old buildings.

TOUR DE LA SERGENTERIE

Towers to visit

Built in the 16th century, this tower is a superb vestige of Poligny's ramparts. At its summit, the lookout could see the attackers approaching and would immediately prepare boiling oil, which he poured through the stone machicolations. Remodeled in the 15th century, it has 4 storeys, with the covered walkway on the second floor. Finally, you should know that its name comes not from the military forces that once inhabited it, but from Sergentin, the former name of the Doye river that flows at its foot. Although not open to visitors, its architecture can be seen at the entrance gate.
