This big, beautiful white house often stands out in the Icelandic capital's landscape, but did you know that it houses a museum dedicated to Icelandic culture? In this human-sized museum, you'll find ancient and modern exhibits on Icelandic culture, including a number of interactive exhibits that are sure to please. The staff are friendly, and the on-site café is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle.

If you find the majestic Skogafoss waterfall too crowded, take a trip to its neighbor, the Kvernufoss waterfall. To reach this hidden waterfall, park at the parking lot next to the Skogar museum (at the last sheet-metal building), then follow the path into the canyon and up to the waterfall, surrounded by beautiful rock walls (you can even walk behind the waterfall). Allow 45 minutes for the round trip, for an easy hike. In winter, the path can be muddy and slippery, so be careful!

In this Icelandic firefighters' museum, you'll find a fine collection of trucks, equipment and objects related to firefighting in Iceland. There's also an exhibition on the biggest fire in Iceland's capital, which took place in 1915. Available by appointment, the owner is a professional in his field, and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

This is the home of artist Ásgrímur Jónsson, the first Icelandic artist to make a career for himself in the art world. Fascinated by Icelandic nature, his many works reflect the beauty of the Icelandic landscape as well as some of its myths. Opened in 1960, two years after his death, this house initially housed a collection of his works before being linked to the National Gallery of Iceland in 1987. A wonderful discovery!

Skarðsvík is an adorable little sand beach (one of only) wedged between cliffs and rocks of a major black. If you have a bit of luck and the snow-capped volcano condescends to be accused... painting becomes fabulous. Although the track is in poor condition, you can continue the road to admire the birds of the cliff with Svörtuloft or turn to the east to explore the Vatnsborg crater.

If you're looking for a small-scale whale-watching cruise, you'll be delighted by this small, passionate and welcoming team. Located some 30 km from Akureyri, Whale Watching Árskógssandur offers a whale-watching cruise in the Eyjafjörður fjord, which can be combined with a beer spa. A little extra: during your excursion, you can warm up with hot chocolate and delicious cinnamon rolls.
