KOERICH CASTLE

Castles to visit

Koerich Castle stands out for its imposing keep, its outer walls forming an almost perfect square, and its enchanting setting alongside Koerich's Baroque church and old houses.

Construction of the castle was undertaken in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by Lord Wiric of Koerich. The keep, also known as the "Hexenturm" (witches' tower), is an impressive example of late Romanesque architecture. Although only 11 meters high today, its original height is estimated at 25 to 30 meters. A spiral staircase built into the walls linked the various floors. Gothic modifications were made in the 14th century, including the construction of a Gothic dwelling and two rectangular towers on the south façade. Today, only the southwest tower, housing the chapel dedicated to Saint Michael, remains. Over the centuries, it has also undergone Renaissance-style alterations, and in 1728, the southern wing was transformed into a Baroque building.

From the second half of the 18th century onwards, Koerich Castle lost its seigniorial residency and its condition deteriorated. Since its classification as a historic monument in 1938, it has been the property of the Luxembourg state. It hosts the "Koerich Concerts", organized by the Käercher Schlassfrënn and the Jeunesses Musicales du Luxembourg. The decanal church offers exceptional acoustics for these concerts, creating a magical musical experience.

BOURGLINSTER CASTLE

Castles to visit

This splendid castle, once home to the Lords of Linster, has belonged to the Luxembourg state since 1968. Its earliest foundations date back to the 10thcentury , but many additions have been made since then. Even today, it is entered via a bridge. The imposing walls house an attractive inner courtyard, as well as a Gothic tower and chapel.

The restaurant La Distillerie is housed here, with Chef René Mathieu at the helm, a Michelin-starred chef since 2012 and voted Chef of the Year 2021 for Luxembourg by the Gault & Millau guide. The latter also awarded him a fine 18/20. The Côté Cour brasserie is located in a wing of the château. Also run by René Mathieu, this establishment offers top-quality local cuisine and boasts a superb terrace overlooking the castle ramparts. The brasserie received a 15.5/20 rating from Gault & Millau.

The building also hosts concerts throughout the year and a classical music festival (Festival de Bourglinster), theoretically in early autumn. With capacity for up to 200 guests, the château can also be booked for weddings, birthdays and other special occasions.

The château's former stables have been restored and now house workshops for professional craftsmen, where courses are organized in ancient trades such as bookbinding, art restoration and ceramics.

BUNN MINE TRAIN

Guided bus and train tours

The "Minièresbunn" is a mining train that takes you into the fascinating world of mining in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The journey takes you to the heart of Minett Park, to a time when Luxembourg's iron mines were still the driving force behind the country's industrialization. The site's history dates back to the 19th century, when Luxembourg's mining industry was at its peak. At that time, numerous iron mines were operating in the Terres rouges region. The "Minièresbunn" train was an essential link in the railway infrastructure, transporting iron ore from the mines to the region's steelworks and blast furnaces.

Today, this mining train has been carefully restored and preserved to offer visitors an authentic immersion in the country's industrial past. Climb aboard and step back in time to relive Luxembourg's mining epic... The narrow-gauge railroad (70 cm gauge) runs from Minett Park (Fond-de-Gras) to Lasauvage, passing through the Doihl mine workings and descending underground through the old rolling gallery. At Lasauvage, the train continues on to Saulnes (France), a former mining and steelworks site. It's an impressive 4 km journey that appeals to young and old alike! Departure from Fond-de-Gras is from the platform next to the café-restaurant Bei der Giedel (with a lovely terrace to stop on the way back).

LE CASTEL

Site of archaeology crafts and science and technology

Halfway between Mondorf and Altwies, on the right bank of the Gander, stands a rocky spur, crowned with a chapel. The inhabitants refer to this rocky plateau as the sanctuary, with the name of Castel. Since the definitive establishment of the borders in 1769, the chapel chapel is in French territory.

A refuge for the Celtic populations 2,500 years ago, the rock was reinforced by a Castellum erected by the Romans towards the year 119 of our era. From the time of the Merovingians, a small convent appears to have existed in Castel. In 1237, Countess Ermesinde donated this convent and her chapel, dedicated to the Saint Savior, to the church of Sainte-Madeleine. Then, from 1571, the Castel was cited as a pilgrimage site.

On a framing of the door, the date of 1611 recalls the access of the hermitage to the chapel. A long line of ermites, the last of which died in 1826, lived in the Castel. The current chapel is only the chorus of the ancient church that was here once.

KUEBENDELLCHEN NATURE RESERVE

Natural site to discover

It is towards the French and German-Luxembourg borders that is located in the Kuebendellchen Natural Park, right next to Schwebsange. This small valley is fed by the Koulerbach, which flows into the neighbouring Moselle. The area looks as though it is an area with a wide range of biotopes, which testify to ancient farming. The richness of flora and fauna has justified protection by becoming a natural park in 1991. A horse on the municipalities of Burmerange and Wellenstein, the park is very hilly and has different types of soil, from limestone to gypsum. Its agricultural use has been very varied, since vines produce a wine of poor quality, but also traces of cattle cattle. Less and less practised since the 1950 s and 1960 s, agriculture has left it to pasture, and then fallow to observe the traces of the old plots. Wildlife consists of many species of birds (70 identified), but also shrews, deer, wild boar and rare butterflies.

HAFF REIMECH NATURE RESERVE

Natural site to discover

The Haff Réimech Nature Reserve is the largest wetland in the Grand Duchy.

It is an ancient zone of gravel pits spread over 80 ha. It is located in the Moselle valley between Schengen and Mondorf. The biotope is made up of marshy areas and about thirty ponds, with most beds. A 4 km nature trail and three observatories are an opportunity to observe the fauna and flora of the reserve. This area is particularly of great ornithological interest.

In Luxembourg, some species, such as penduline penduline, the least dwarf or turdoïde turdoïde, nest only on this site. Observations can be made all year long, although summer is the quietest period. In the spring, the site hosts about 80 species, including the posh grèbe, the hobereau falcon and the scaup milouin and morillon. During the fall, you will see the osprey, nyroca scaup, large pappus, l garzette, dasycarpum heron, and more than 20 migrating species. In winter, the snipe sourde, the piette merganser, the starry bittern and, more exceptionally, loons and Arctic loons overwinter on the reserve. CULTURAL ROUTES

Local history and culture

The town of Wiltz has set up two cultural trails to discover the Upper Town and the Lower Town. About thirty panels mark out the two overlapping trails (some places are therefore common) and are complementary. The numbering therefore goes from 1 to 33.

Cultural Trail 1: This walk (yellow route) is about 3 km long and includes 21 sights in the Upper Town. You will learn, among other things, why Wiltz received the honorary title of Martyr City. You will get acquainted with the Prabbeli socio-cultural centre and stroll through Wiltz's garden. You can also admire the 300-year-old baroque high altar in the parish church of Our Lady. The route forms a loop: it starts at the Wiltz Tourist Office and ends at the Battle of the Bulge Museum, both sites being located in the castle.

Cultural Trail 2: About 4.5 km long, this second walk (red route) includes 25 curiosities, 12 of which are in the Lower Town. It also starts at the Wiltz Tourist Office and ends at the primary school built in 1951 according to the plans of Jos Werner and Chrétien Scholl, two architects from Esch-sur-Alzette. During the walk, you will discover the Rodange-Reenert-Kulturwee, a sculptural ensemble unique in Europe, the variety of decorated keystones of the former choir of the decanal church, the last windmill in Luxembourg, the geological Stations of the Cross and the sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima.

Surrounded by a pretty cemetery with its schist crosses, the Bavigne parish church has a sanctuary built in 1744 and a bell tower, the lower part of which may be older. The place is best known for its high altar designed and built by the sculptor Nicolas Jacques de Nobressart (1713-1793), a craftsman from Wiltz, and renovated in 1956 by Josef van Heckern from Essen. The church has been classified as a national monument since 1961.
