MEMORIAL TO THE VICTIMS OF THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE

Cemetery and memorial to visit

The bomb that makes up this very discreet memorial located on the outskirts of the village was found intact in a wood near the commune, after being dropped by an American plane on Christmas Day 1944. It was installed there in September 1980, in memory of the victims of the Battle of the Bulge which took place during the winter of 1944-1945. This bloody episode of the Second World War caused more than 200,000 dead, wounded and missing.

HARELERBERG CHAPEL (CHAPELLE NOTRE-DAME)

During the Von Rundstedt offensive (the first offensive of the Battle of the Bulge), the inhabitants of Bavigne promised to erect a chapel to Mary. And so, since 1953, this rounded summit, known locally as Harelerberg, has been topped by three large wooden crosses and this chapel. Until recently, a stone statue of the Virgin Mary stood on a stone pedestal, but for safety reasons it was moved to the parish church.

SOLARBOOT UM SEI (SOLAR BOAT)

Water tours and activities

The solar boat offers guided tours on the lake of the Haute-Sûre, to discover its fauna and its surrounding nature. The tour lasts about 2 hours and is well worth the detour: the nature is perfectly preserved and the place looks like a real haven of peace. If you wish, the "amphibian tour" combines the boat tour with a hike along the left bank of the reservoir. Reservations are required at the Maison du Parc naturel.

RECKINGEN CASTLE

Castles to visit

The Lords of Reckingen were first mentioned in documents in the 12th century. The castle was owned by the Fock von Hübingen family in the 16th century (Ernst Fock von Hübingen, who died in 1573, is buried in the parish church in a Renaissance vault) and later by Cavalry Captain Peter Blum in 1699. In 1870 the fortress was completely razed to the ground. The medieval keep, with dimensions of 9 x 9 m and 1.5 m thick walls, was preserved over a height of 3 m, before being integrated into a private dwelling.

MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF THE CITY OF DIEKIRCH

Inaugurated in 2012, the Diekirch History[s] Museum comprises five rooms, each dedicated to a specific thematic area. Each subject is presented according to a chronological development from prehistory to the present day. Historical exhibits such as a Roman mosaic, the work of archaeologists, the investigations of historians and the observations of geologists are on display. This museum is located on the same site as the town's Maison de la Culture.

CLAUSEN GERMAN MILITARY CEMETERY

Cemetery to visit

263 bodies lie in this burial place (Deutscher Soldatenfriendhof). From 1815 to 1866, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was part of the Prussian Union and the nearby fortress (today's Dräi Eechelen or Three Acorns Museum) was occupied by a Prussian garrison. The dead of this garrison were buried in this cemetery. French and German soldiers were buried here during the First World War and German soldiers during the Second World War.

SANDWEILER GERMAN MILITARY CEMETERY

In this cemetery (Deutscher Soldatenfriendhof) lie 10,914 German soldiers, 4,829 of whom are buried in a mass grave (Kameradengrab). 810 could not be identified. Most of them died during the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944-1945. The first German cemetery outside of Germany, this place was set up by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge). A second German cemetery (262 bodies) is located in the district of Clausen.

SHELTER IN WIEWESCH

SHEPHERD'S CASTLE

The first mention of a lord of Berg dates back to 1311. Passing from the hands of King William II of the Netherlands, to the Grand Duke Adolphe and then to the Grand Duke William IV, the castle underwent important transformations until it was demolished and completely rebuilt. In 1934, the fortress became the property of the Luxembourg State. Following the Second World War, the castle will need an important restoration. It was not until 1964 that the castle became the main residence of the grand-ducal family after a long period of rehabilitation.

ANCIEN SIÈGE DE L'ARBED

Now owned by the Banque Caisse d'Epargne de l'Etat (BCEE), the former headquarters of Arbed (which became Arcelor and then ArcelorMittal) is an impressive historic building with four wings grouped around a beautiful, large inner courtyard. Built between 1920 and 1922 and once a symbol of Luxembourg's steel industry and economic power, this "castle" was renovated after being bought by BCEE in 2014 and was inaugurated in 2016. The building is now an administrative building but is worth a look from the outside.

SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH OF GRUND

Founded in 1308 by Henry VII, Count of Luxembourg, the church was dedicated in 1311 to Saint John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary. In 1606, the church, then hospitable, was associated with the new complex of the Abbey of Neumünster, under the influence of the Benedictine monks. The interior, although sober, houses rich Baroque furnishings: the pulpit, the organ, but also the monumental golden high altar and the sanctuary dedicated to the Black Virgin (to the left of the nave), whose statue was made in 1400.

MONUMENT DU SOUVENIR "GËLLE FRA"

Located on the Place de la Constitution, a stone's throw from the Casemates de Pétrusse, the Monument du Souvenir Gëlle Fra (meaning "golden woman" in French) was inaugurated in 1923 in memory of the Luxembourg soldiers who fell at the front during the First World War. This monument is a must in Luxembourg City and consists of a 21-meter high stone obelisk. At the top of the obelisk is a golden woman holding a laurel wreath towards two soldiers.

SCHUMANN'S ECK MEMORIAL OR MEMORIAL 44-45

This memorial was erected on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Luxembourg by the Allied armies. It contains the plaques of the American units that took part in the battle. Nearby, a 3 km-long memorial trail leads through the woods that were the object of intense fighting. The holes of the riflemen correspond to the locations of the bodies of the 160 German and American soldiers who were discovered there after the fighting that followed on December 30, 1944.

Nicknamed "the inkwell" because of its original octagonal shape, this tiny neo-Gothic chapel with its white walls is a true rarity. Built between 1849 and 1852, it is dedicated to Saint Cunégonde. HANGING ROOM

Local history and culture

This room was used until 1972 as a locker room for the workers of the Lasauvage mines. The miners put their civilian clothes on a hook and pulled the chain under the ceiling, hence the name of the place. At the time, this installation was more practical than cupboards, since the clothes hung on the hook dried more quickly and the floors were easier to clean. The room still has some old lockers and period wash basins. The facility is sometimes used as an exhibition space during the Blues Express festival.

DALHEIM'S EAGLE

Columns and statues to see

Erected in 1855 in memory of the Gallo-Roman site of Dalheim, this monument is almost six metres high. It was destroyed during the Second World War in 1940 by the Germans before being rebuilt in 1957. On each of its sides are various inscriptions in several languages (French, German and Latin). The eagle, a highly symbolic animal linked to the conquest of power, is placed on a globe and has its gaze turned towards the city of Trier (Germany), while its body is oriented towards Metz (France).

GALLO-ROMAN VILLA OF MIECHER

In the Miecher forest, several ruins of a Gallo-Roman farm have been uncovered and are being beautifully restored. Built in the 1st century AD, the estate extended over no less than 5 hectares and was bounded by a rampart. At least seven stone buildings were present on the site. It was probably occupied until the end of the 4th century. Numerous signs give indications about the site and life at the time.

BRANDENBURG CASTLE

Built in the 9th and 13th centuries, there are still very beautiful ruins of Brandenburg Castle (name of its first known owner, Godfrey of Brandenburg - 1244-1284). The wooden route with explanatory panels starts at the tunnel that connects the main castle with the farmyard of the original castle keep. COLUMNS OF NATIONS

Contemporary architecture

The Columns of Nations, located opposite the European Centre, are the work of architect François Valentiny (who also designed the building of the European Schengen Centre). The first column was erected in 2010 and the other two in 2014. They are almost 9 metres high and bear bronze stars symbolising the countries of the Schengen area. The spaces left free are intended to receive the stars of the countries that will join the European area in the future. On the ground are sealed bronze plaques with the names of the signatory states.

The sculpture E Schlass fir Schengen is a steel portal decorated with twenty-six stars, where visitors can hang padlocks as a sign of belonging to the same community. HAUTE-SÛRE NATURE PARK

Natural site to discover

With an area of 18 387 hectares (about 250 km ²), this park, established in 1999, comprises 7 communes (Boulaide, Ell, Esch-sur-Safe, Heiderscheid, Lake of Haute-safe, Neunhausen and Weinseler). The resident population is approximately 5 500 inhabitants.

The lake of Haute-Safe and its facilities are the main point of the park. This artificial lake, 380 hectares and 27 km in length, was created in 1961 by the construction of a dam that allows the supply of two thirds of the country to drinking water. The bottom of the main restraint, upstream of the Misery Bridge, is a wild fauna, elsewhere threatened with extinction, such as the otter, the wild cat or the grouse. The lake trail (42 km) allows walkers to admire the beauty of the region and there is the possibility to practise a good number of water sports. The park is the starting point for many thematic circuits with distances ranging from 600 m to 8 km and rides.
