ROTONDES

Monuments to visit

The House are in 2007 the base camp of the European Capital of Culture, being at the same time information centre, meeting point for all visitors, exhibition space and event venue. They are located right behind the Luxembourg-Ville railway station, at the edge of the Bonnevoie district and thus easily accessible for all visitors and tourists. Classified at National Historic Monuments by Government order in 1991, these two warehouses of 5 000 m 2 built in 1875 served until little, repair workshop for locomotives and buses of the Luxembourg Railways (CFL). In 2007, each of them has specific orientations: Rotonde 1 is more focused on exhibitions and facilities and Rotonde 2, more on performances especially for and by young people.

MUNICIPAL PARK

DEPORTATION MEMORIAL (1940-1945)

SAINT MICHAEL'S CHURCH

It's one of the oldest places of worship in the city. Originally, the place housed a small chapel, which was converted into a church in 987 by Archbishop Egbert of Trier. St. Michael's Church was destroyed and rebuilt many times, modified and enlarged many times. It was only in 1688 that it was given its present appearance and combines various architectural styles from the Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic periods. PATTON MUSEUM

Specialized museum

Inaugurated in 1995, this museum and a monument were erected in honour of General George Patton, commander of the US Third Army, who liberated Ettelbruck during the Second World War on 25 December 1944. Numerous photographs and documents document the German invasion in May 1940, the Nazi occupation, and the liberation by American troops. Numerous weapons and military equipment are on display. General Patton is buried in the American military cemetery of Luxembourg-Hamm, in the eastern suburbs of Luxembourg City.

CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY OF THE VIRGIN MARY

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1757 on older foundations. The tower dates back to 1806. In the apse there is a Gothic Eucharistic cupboard. ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH

Situated near the bridge over the river Our, the church of St. Nicholas was built in the lower town by the Order of the Knights Templar, towards the end of the 13th century, when Vianden was divided into two parishes. The building was destroyed by fire in 1723 and rebuilt the following year. The interior, a single nave with a ribbed vault, houses a Baroque high altar, made in 1768 by the carpenter Fischbach from Vianden and enriched with Rococo elements. Note that until 1801 the lower town was part of the parish of Roth.

SAINT WILLIBRORD CHURCH

This church, founded in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 16th century, has a late medieval Gothic nave. Its ribbed vaults include a group of remarkable frescoes. SAINT-HUBERT CHURCH

Its foundations date back to the 13th century. The tower is made of Ardennes schist and the façades of the nave are covered with the white plaster typical of the Ardennes. The interior of the chapel has a single nave with three bays. The keystone above the high altar represents the coat of arms of Frederick II of Brandenburg. The altarpiece of the altar illustrates the glorification of the patron saint of the church. Murals from the 15th and 16th centuries depict a crucified Christ, the symbols of the four evangelists and polychrome ornamentation of the flames.

SAINT PIRMINE'S CHAPEL

Built in 1653 and rebuilt in 1772, this modest chapel is a place of pilgrimage on Whit Monday. It houses an impressive white baroque altarpiece with a statue of Saint Pirmin. The bishop is said to have lived as a hermit near the cluse in which there is a well, whose water is said to have medicinal virtues (it was used to cure children's diseases). Be careful not to confuse the tiny hermitage, which is located a few dozen meters from the main road, with this building, which is located on a higher ground.

BATTLE OF THE BULGE MUSEUM

On 16 December 1944, under the command of General von Rundstedt, German troops attacked the American line along the Sûre and the Our. This bloody episode of the Second World War, which lasted two months and caused thousands of casualties, is called the Battle of the Bulge. NOTRE-DAME-DE-LLORETTE CHAPEL

The chapel was built in 1762 in a late baroque style by Count Adrien Jean-Baptiste de Lannoy and his wife Constance de Wignancourt to make it a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Mary. On the portal are represented their coat of arms and a relief of Our Lady of Loreto. Inside, the ceiling is adorned with a stuccoed rocaille decoration. The first Christian altar was probably built in the 7th century on a Roman shrine and gave its name to the town, diet kirch meaning "people's church". Of the Romanesque building constructed around the year 1000, only a 12th century tower remains today. In the 15th century, the church was transformed to have two naves in Gothic style. The 16th century frescoes illustrate the life of St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the church. In the crypt there are Roman and Merovingian sarcophagi from the 6th century that were discovered under the church.

BREECHKAUL AMPHITHEATER

The Breechkaul amphitheater was built in 1979 in a strange cavity in an ancient rock. The rock dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was used to extract rocks and make millstones. This atypical place is now the object of concerts in summer and of cultural or religious events. The mass of Saint Hubert (patron saint of hunters), whose musical accompaniment is produced by hunting horns, is celebrated there every year on the Sunday following November 2. The city walls, built between the 10th and 13th centuries, were 2 km long and had four gates and 20 towers. Damaged in the 19th century, only a much shorter part remains today (count 500 metres when following the cultural circuit). Most of the towers were also destroyed, while those in good condition were sold at public auction in 1813 and converted into apartments, three of which are now available for rent as charming accommodation.

Street square and neighborhood to visit

The market square, which is on the route of the dancing Procession, is a major area of the city center. Its particular form comes from the route of two major Roman pathways that crossed there. At its center, the Cross of Justice, called "Urtsel" (the column of the judgment), affirmed the secular power of the abbey. SAINT-MICHEL TOWER

Erected in 1707, the Saint-Michel tower, named after the famous archangel who struck down evil, is a remnant of the former parish church. It is 40 metres high and has an original architectural form. Recognizable by its unique dome-shaped dome roof with an octagonal, baroque bulb, it is the symbol of the city of Mersch. Since 1997, the monument has had a faithful companion and neighbour, a bronze dragon statue. ROMAN VILLA MARISCA

Mersch houses, in a small building in the centre of the Rue des Romains, the foundations of a Gallo-Roman villa with a very well preserved hypocaust (an underfloor heating system). The site was partially excavated in 1905-1906, by the state architect C. Arendt. About 20 metres away, there are traces of what was once a monumental basin, 6 m wide and 75 m long. This basin, once made of stone,is today largely covered by grass. The drainage channel channelled the excess water back into the Mamer.

PETTINGEN CASTLE RUINS

Owned by the State since 1947, this former fortress is now in ruins. However, one of the towers and the walls are fairly well preserved. Its enclosure forms a square of 30 metres on each side, which was once surrounded by a moat fed by the Weillerbach stream. Its history dates back to the 10th century: the fortress was then known as Pittigero Mazini. The name Pettingen or Pittange was not given to it until the 13th century.

The Château de Septfontaines, built at the end of the 11th century, is now private property. The baroque gate dates from the 13th century and a Gothic part was added around 1400. The bridge over the entrance and the large square tower date from 1600.
