While this museum presents the history of Luxembourg's armed forces from their creation to the present day, it also invites visitors to reflect on the events of the Second World War. And mainly to the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the winter of 1944-1945. The centrepiece of this museum is undoubtedly the reconstruction of the crossing of the river Sûre near Diekirch on 18 January 1945 by units of the 5th U.S. infantry division.

ABBEY MUSEUM

Specialized museum

The Abbey Museum, housed in the vaulted cellars of the former abbey, is a must in Echternach. You will admire the magnificently illuminated manuscripts from the scriptorium of the abbey of Echternach, one of the most famous in Europe from the 8th to the 11th century. These are facsimiles which are presented because the original works were scattered throughout Europe. For example, the evangeliary of St Willibrord is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. A second part of the museum evokes the work of Saint Willibrord, his time and his provenance.

THE HSMBC

Museums

Located in the heart of the country, the primary aim of the Centre de documentation sur les migrations humaines (CDMH) is to collect, preserve and share the personal and collective stories of migrants and their descendants, who have helped shape society in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. It organizes exhibitions, conferences, readings, round tables and thematic workshops. Its vast collection includes documents, archives, photographs, films, audiovisual recordings, oral testimonies and various publications. In addition to temporary exhibitions, free guided tours (subject to the availability of a guide) of the working-class immigrant district of Italy last around an hour. This concept of a "museum without walls" is centered around two alleyways: "l'Italie Haute", today's rue des Minières, and "l'Italie Basse", today's rue Gare-Usines. The aim: to understand the fundamental role played by migration in the economic, social and cultural development of this cross-border, cosmopolitan area. The CDMH also offers consultation and support services for those wishing to explore their family history linked to migration. It also works with schools to develop educational programs and raise awareness of the importance of migration among the younger generation. A must-see institution for curious travelers and history buffs alike.

ROMAN VILLA OF ECHTERNACH

Archaeological site

It is one of the largest Roman villas in Central Europe! The Villa of Echternach was discovered in 1975, during the earthworks of the artificial lake in the place called Schwarzuecht: vestiges of walls are touched by excavators. Excavation work then began. It is the original name of this house, the Villa Epternacum, which would have given the name of the city of Echternach.

The museum.Located at the entrance of the site, it exhibits reconstructed scenes of Gallo-Roman daily life with life-size models and models, which give a glimpse of the luxurious interior of the house.

The Hortus Amoenus, the adjoining garden, contains no less than 70 species of medicinal and ornamental plants grown in Roman times. A pergola covered with vines is also accessible.

The Roman villa. The main buildings were 118 m long and 62 m wide and had nearly seventy rooms on the first floor. The villa, extremely luxurious, was composed of rich materials and perfectly decorated: frescos on the walls, marble and mosaics for the ground, bathrooms heated by hypocaust, fountain and large ornamental basin. The 10 hectares of land also included ten annex buildings. The villa was modified and enlarged several times between the 1st and5th centuries AD before falling into ruin and being used as a "quarry" for reused stones.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BREWING AND TANNERY ART

Specialized museum
4/5
1 review

In addition to the Battle of the Bulge Museum, Wiltz Castle houses four beer and tannery-related establishments within its walls, all of which can be accessed with a single ticket.

National Museum of Brewing Art.

Created in 1999, this is the first beer museum in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is located in the former stables of the castle. The exhibits not only give an insight into the 6,000-year history of beer production, but also document the exciting development of the art of brewing in Luxembourg. On the ground floor, the most important steps in the production of beer are explained (crushing of malt, filtration, fermentation, etc.).

Musée de la Tannerie.

This museum gives an idea of the importance of the tannery for the town, whose leather work dates back to 1644. In 1887, Wiltz had 28 tanneries, the last of which, the Ideal, the most important luxury leather factory in Western Europe, closed in 1961.

Micro-Brewery.

Installed in 2000, this part of the museum works in conjunction with the Simon brewery. Its role is mainly educational in order to give an overview of the different production cycles, but it can still produce up to 50 litres of beer. It is one of the smallest breweries in the world.

Jhang Primus Coffee. End your visit with a beer in this charming café, decorated with objects from various regional cafés that are now closed.

Exhibitions feature works from the City of Luxembourg's collections, highlighting treasures of 17th-century Dutch art and 19th-century French paintings, including works by masters such as Eugène Delacroix and Jules Dupré. The collection also includes paintings and sculptures by Luxembourg artists of the 19thand 20th centuries, who influenced art before and after the Second World War. It is regularly supplemented by donations and acquisitions. In addition to the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions allow visitors to discover different periods and styles.
