ROCK ENGRAVINGS OF MONFRAGÜE
Read moreMonfragüe National Park has an exceptional density of rock paintings, reflecting the important human occupation of the site, linked to the presence of the Tajo and Tietar rivers. Paintings focus mainly on ford. 107 painted shelters were identified, but as the region was the subject of large yards under Franco, particularly with the construction of dams which led to rising water levels, it certainly counted much more 50 years ago. Many paintings are open air but are not reported, to avoid damage.
The Grotte Castle cave, accessible by a group of 10 people, has one of the most beautiful rock legacies in the park. There was a pyramid of human silhouettes drawn by the finger and iron oxide and a large deer, certainly older. The shelter has a total of 140 figures on 8 different panels, which you may have the chance to see in detail. In 2016, the interpretation centre plans to develop an application that will allow, after taking a picture of paintings with a tablet or smartphone, to highlight the features, details and colours that have become invisible to the naked eye.
A little higher, the castle, 480 m high, offers splendid views over the park as a whole. This is the starting point for many walks to get involved in bird watching: vultures, royal eagles and storks in particular are very numerous in the park.
CULLALVERA CAVE
Read moreLess impressive than Covalanas by his paintings, Cullalvera is by its spectacular and immense mouth. Located in the heart of the village, the gallery measures no less than 12 km of length, half of which is right-line. As much as it is much easier to travel than in the small Covalanas gallery. Paintings were discovered in 1954. Open to the public in 2007, it offers plenty of space to accommodate scenographic spaces and also to the geological observation with beautiful concrete all along the walls. The paintings are concentrated in a sector hundreds of meters from the entrance, which, like Covalanas, assumes that they were in total darkness and visible only by artificial lighting. There are many signs and symbols, as well as horses and deer.

SAJA BESAYA NATURAL PARK
Read moreThis 24 500 hectare area is situated on horseback between the valleys of the Saja and Besaya rivers. In fact, the Natural Park is only part of the immense national reserve of Saja, which covers almost the entire western half of Cantabria from the River Besaya to the Peaks of Europe. The forests of this protected area are a fine example of the Atlantic forests clean to humid Spain: oaks, beech near the river Saja and its tributary Argoza, birch. The wildlife is rich in deer, deer and wild boar. Large prairies, Les, keep livestock on day-parole. It is thanks to this form of exploitation that the Tudanca cow, the indigenous race of Cantabria, has been preserved. The Saja is a river where trout are fished. It seems enough to say the fisherman's prayer (on the line): " Give me, my God, a fish so great that I don't need to lie. "
FOCES DEL PINO
Read moreThis 300-metre parade is part of the protected natural monuments of Asturias. They can be accessed from El Pino (hiking, signposted PRAS 31), followed by river which crosses the woods of native chestnut trees and oaks as well as meadows in dense green. Then comes a more rocky part (but accessible with shoes that adhere). At the end, you access the gorge, the main natural monument. Take about 3 hours, go and return, for a circuit of about 7 km. The walk is very nice and is going without difficulty. Take a few small reservations if you want to stop in order to enjoy a picnic view.
