TIRAJANA CALDERA

Natural site to discover
4/5
1 review

It is a large caldera, crater, on which are hung the villages of Santa Lucía and San Bartolomé de Tirajana. This place presents a great landscape singularity because it combines the steep relief of the territory, the architectural ensemble, the richness of the vegetation and the agricultural landscape. The Tirajana gorges are born on the caldera and lead to the sea in the Juan Grande plain. In this basin is the Sorrueda dam. It is in the heart of this environment that you will find the most beautiful and vast palm groves on the island, the Surrueda palm grove located very close to the dam is particularly worth a visit. You can go for camel rides and hikes.

Located 300 metres from City Hall, these underground shelters were used as shelters in 1936 and 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. Designed by architect Guillermo Langle Rubio, they are 9 metres deep and represent a total of 4.5 km of underground circuits, of which about 1 km has been recovered. The visit shows different spaces: the shop, the Guillero Langle refuge and the surgical space with all the instruments of the time. Today, they are the largest shelters of this type open to the public throughout Europe.

HISTORIC HEART

Local history and culture
4/5
1 review

Founded at the beginning of the 16th century by the conquistadores, it is a pretty, quiet village with cobbled streets whose historic centre, casco antiguo , has remained practically unchanged since its creation. This is why it has been declared a monument of historical and artistic interest in its entirety. A stroll will allow you to enjoy the beautiful French gardens "Jardines del Marquesado de la Quinta Roja", wonderfully maintained, its botanical garden, flowered squares, and beautiful Castilian mansions. By pushing the heavy wooden doors, you will discover beautiful civil or religious buildings, as well as houses with balconies from the 17th and 18th centuries. You will see beautiful facades on the carretera del Escultor Estévez and a 16th century house on the plaza del Ayuntamiento. In the Plaza San Francisco and in Calle del Dr. González Garcia, the gofio mills date back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. To obtain this staple food inherited from the Guanches, today's Canary Islanders still grind corn, barley or wheat. Some of the mills are still in operation, but are now powered by electricity rather than water. The Town Hall, located in the Plaza Ayuntamiento, is a neoclassical building from the late 19th century. Behind the Church of the Concepción, Calle Colegio, which becomes Calle San Francisco, is a small, sloping alleyway that concentrates a string of superb Canarian mansions with facades adorned with richly sculpted balconies.

The Sierra de Bèrnia follows the coast perpendicular to Callosa from En to Sarrià and to Pointe de Toix. In its upper part, it is a sharp limestone ridge that reaches 1 129 metres above sea level. And it's south of the summit that you find the ruins of the Fort of Bèrnia, built by Philip II to contain the rebellions of the moriscos populations, converted Muslims, who then populated these mountains. The PR-V 7 route is recommended as a small hiking trail for an overview of this space classified as a protected landscape. He leaves Boxes of Bèrnia, in Xaló, follows the north slope to the forat, Trou hole, a surprising natural tunnel that crosses the ridge, to return to the south slope, passing through the Fort. This excursion offers privileged panoramic views over the bay of Altea.

ESCALADEI - MONASTERY OF THE CARTHUSIAN MONKS

Visit Points of interest
4/5
1 review

The monastery of Santa Maria d'Escaladei was built by monks of the Order of Carthusian monks who came from Provence in the 12th century. They set their sights on this particular place to build the first monastery of their Order on the Iberian Peninsula because of the protection offered by the Montsant mountain, where it is said that a shepherd had seen in his dreams a ladder affixed to a tree along which angels passed, hence the name of the place: Escaladei, God's ladder. During their residence, which lasted almost 700 years, the monks built many mills and cultivated the vines, before being forced to abandon everything in 1835, following the passing of the laws of desamortizacion expropriating all the religious in Spain. In two years, the monastery was looted and ransacked by the population, delighted to finally free itself from the religious yoke and the harsh taxes imposed by it. The visit that can be made today is certainly that of ruins, but the scale of the construction is impressive despite everything: we discover three cloisters, a church, a canteen as well as the reproduction of a monastic cell equipped with furniture and accessories. We strongly advise you to choose the guided tour (in French by prior reservation only), which allows you to put into perspective all the dimensions of the life of the monks of the time and the impact of their presence on the history and culture of the region. An unmissable visit.

It was the great church of Montemolín, built in 1525 on the location of a hospital where pilgrims were resting, cheminant towards Santiago de Compostela. With a very large dimension, it marks the transition between late Gothic and Renaissance, with a rectangular, single-nave shape and beautiful Gothic design. It has fifteen altars (altar), each with a altarpiece, mainly of the th century. In addition to beautiful jewellery pieces, it houses a large collection of sacred books, including chronologies, ranging from 1575 to the present.

A vast natural area of 4.5 hectares, occupied between 1962 and 2004 by Club Med facilities. After the purchase of the site by the municipality, the complex was destroyed to integrate this "landscape" of Tudela into the Cap de Creus Natural Park. Simply equipped with a tarred path, the site offers a superb walk of about 6 km (round trip) punctuated by fantastic rocks - a source of inspiration for several of Dalí's works - and secret coves where you can cool off in summer!

Situated on a cliff facing El Bajoncillo beach, this small palace was built in the th century in neo-mudéjar style, a flourishing architectural style in Spain of the late th century. Renovated and reopened in 2014, it now became an emblematic part of Torremolinos. The building has two floors, the ground floor being the place of accommodation with rooms, office, dining room, kitchen, and above all an interior decoration imitating that of the Alhambra of Granada. On the first floor, it serves as a cross towards the coast. On the outside you will notice its two side towers as well as its main portico. Built at the request of Antonio Navajas, enriched in the culture of sugar cane, this Casa sheltered three generations of the Navajas family before becoming municipal heritage in 2000.
