HISTORIC HEART
Read moreFounded at the beginning of the 16th century by the conquistadores, it is a pretty, quiet village with cobbled streets whose historic centre, casco antiguo , has remained practically unchanged since its creation. This is why it has been declared a monument of historical and artistic interest in its entirety. A stroll will allow you to enjoy the beautiful French gardens "Jardines del Marquesado de la Quinta Roja", wonderfully maintained, its botanical garden, flowered squares, and beautiful Castilian mansions. By pushing the heavy wooden doors, you will discover beautiful civil or religious buildings, as well as houses with balconies from the 17th and 18th centuries. You will see beautiful facades on the carretera del Escultor Estévez and a 16th century house on the plaza del Ayuntamiento. In the Plaza San Francisco and in Calle del Dr. González Garcia, the gofio mills date back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. To obtain this staple food inherited from the Guanches, today's Canary Islanders still grind corn, barley or wheat. Some of the mills are still in operation, but are now powered by electricity rather than water. The Town Hall, located in the Plaza Ayuntamiento, is a neoclassical building from the late 19th century. Behind the Church of the Concepción, Calle Colegio, which becomes Calle San Francisco, is a small, sloping alleyway that concentrates a string of superb Canarian mansions with facades adorned with richly sculpted balconies.

ESCALADEI - MONASTERY OF THE CARTHUSIAN MONKS
Read moreThe monastery of Santa Maria d'Escaladei was built by monks of the Order of Carthusian monks who came from Provence in the 12th century. They set their sights on this particular place to build the first monastery of their Order on the Iberian Peninsula because of the protection offered by the Montsant mountain, where it is said that a shepherd had seen in his dreams a ladder affixed to a tree along which angels passed, hence the name of the place: Escaladei, God's ladder. During their residence, which lasted almost 700 years, the monks built many mills and cultivated the vines, before being forced to abandon everything in 1835, following the passing of the laws of desamortizacion expropriating all the religious in Spain. In two years, the monastery was looted and ransacked by the population, delighted to finally free itself from the religious yoke and the harsh taxes imposed by it. The visit that can be made today is certainly that of ruins, but the scale of the construction is impressive despite everything: we discover three cloisters, a church, a canteen as well as the reproduction of a monastic cell equipped with furniture and accessories. We strongly advise you to choose the guided tour (in French by prior reservation only), which allows you to put into perspective all the dimensions of the life of the monks of the time and the impact of their presence on the history and culture of the region. An unmissable visit.
