It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Brihadeeswara Temple of Thanjavur and the Gangaikondacholisvaram. This magnificent complex of Dravidian architecture is relatively well preserved. The complex has a theertham (sacred basin) connected to the Cauvery River. A small museum is located to the right of the entrance, with beautiful sculptures and some mural paintings from the Chola period.
