26 km south of Ooty is the Avalanche Lake, named after a titanic avalanche in 1823. The lake is lined with various flowers: orchids, magnolias, rhododendrons... It is one of the best places for trout fishing; you can rent rods. It is also a popular place for locals to picnic and enjoy the surrounding nature. Further away is Mukerti Peak, at an altitude of 2,400 m, which is also part of the Nilgiri Tahr Reserve, created in the most remote part of the mountains.
