It is the deepest France! Located at the northwestern end of the Massif Central. This rural territory, included in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is among the departments named after their river and is characterized by a still very lively agriculture, essentially animated by cattle breeding. As a proof, you will cross many cows in the field, especially of this Limousin breed known for its meat and especially on the plateau of Millevaches. More four-legged animals than humans in this department. After Lozère, Creuse is the second least populated department in France. Its prefecture, Guéret, has less than 15 000 inhabitants. If its natural heritage, alternating forests, peat bogs and mountain pastures, and its gentle landscapes, constitute its main tourist wealth, Aubusson with its historical monuments and its international city of tapestry, remains a must-see. Other tourist spots are the lake of Vassivière, the spa of Évaux-les-Bains, some remarkable castles and the Giant Labyrinth of the mountains of Guéret, the largest permanent vegetal labyrinth in the world. You will appreciate the authenticity of the Creuse, its gentle tourism, without any snobbery or prices that soar in high season, and the possibility of practicing a multitude of outdoor activities in complete tranquility: hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, climbing, water sports...
In the Creuse, the climate is humid, cold and very variable. Stay tuned for the weather! The air is pure, but lively. Winters are generally long, especially in the south of the department where snow can persist for several weeks. The north of the department is more temperate. Summers are short. Autumn is generally the most beautiful season in the Creuse. While livestock farming and handicrafts (Aubusson tapestry) dominate the economy, Creuse intends to develop green tourism, a new component that has helped it to close its gap with neighbouring departments in recent years. Tourism professionals are committed to extending the season around the summer months, from late June to mid-October you will find many establishments open and events are scheduled as cultural or gourmet events that retain visitors and allow local producers and artisans to enhance their work. Lake Vassivière, shared with the Haute-Vienne department, in particular, attracts tourists during the summer months.
The climate of the Creuse is contrasted while keeping a certain softness. The winter is cold but temperatures are rarely negative. There is no heat wave in summer. Its relief, varying from 200 to 900 m of altitude from north to south, modulates the oceanic influence to which this territory is subjected. Rainfall increases from north to south. The number of rainy days in Guéret is close to 180 per year. Half of the year!
